An award presentation took place recently at Tudor House Studio & Gallery in Sawbridgeworth where winners and runners-up were presented with their prizes. The painting competition, sponsored by In a Frame, Sawbridgeworth, was arranged in conjunction with the Herts and Essex Observer who we thank for their support and their permission to reproduce the photograph above.

After judgly huddles for the entries in our recent painting competition for local children we have an overall winner! Daisy Kershaw won with her fantastic painting of a gymnast in action over a backdrop of the Union flag. Her winning entry has been mounted and framed by In a Frame and was presented to her at a recent winners ceremony. She also wins an hours one to one painting lesson with local artist/tutor Paulene Brakspear.

The competition was run in conjunction with the Herts & Essex Observer newspaper.

Congratulations to all winners and runners up and a big thank you and well done to all entrants!

Tapestry Framing

October is "Tapestry Month" at In a Frame. All tapestries are stretched using the traditional 'lacing' method and are therefore fully reversible. We do not use glues, gummed tapes or staples in the stretching process so your artwork will not be damaged by these potentially harmful methods.

All tapestries brought into the In a Frame workshop during October will be eligible for a 10% discount off the total frame cost.

Diffused Glass (Non-Reflective Glass)

During September, all customers have the option to select diffused glazing for their frames
for the same price as ordinary glass.

Diffused glass helps reduce the reflection caused by artificial lighting or natural light entering a room through windows and doors and is particularly effective when used in picture frames housing photographs and art prints.

The diffused picture framing glass we use is acid etched on one side to give a non glare, diffused finish. Please note that it is not suitable for deep box framing or multi layered mounts over 3mm in depth.

We will be delighted to show you examples of framing incorporating diffused glass if you call into the workshop. You will be able to judge the difference for yourself.

Who Do You Think You Are?

What secrets are hiding in your family's past? Could you be related to royalty and not know it, or could you have distant relatives in far-flung corners of the world? Digging into your genealogy can unearth some fascinating finds, so don't leave your own history buried.

I've recently framed two one metre wide family trees for a local resident. The documents trace the owners family back to 1620 and these hand-written colourful documents are now preserved for future generations and will provide a beautiful talking point in the customers home.

These days there is a wealth of information available on the Internet at the click of a button and it's a great place to start your research. But the most interesting stories are to be found by rolling up your sleeves and searching through the boxes of photographs and documents that most families have accumulated in the attic or under the bed. You'll be amazed at the spectrum of emotions that old letters or diaries can conjure up - from romance and celebration through to heartbreak and loss. What makes it so intriguing is they are people related to you and their stories are preserved throughout the decades for you to discover. The saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words and going through albums and scrapbooks could reveal some great photographs that bring your family history to life. It's such a shame to leave these items neglected, so why not consider having them framed for all to see and enjoy? Framers can be bursting with creative ideas that probably never crossed your mind or you never even thought possible.

Framing your family history mementos doesn't just look good either - if the correct materials are used it can help preserve them too. Valuable or sentimentally important pieces should always be framed using conservation materials. Conservation framing preserves and protects artwork, photographs or objects by using materials which will not harm the piece and will as much as possible protect it from physical damage.

People are often amazed, not only about how many different things can be framed, but also how effective the end result is. So don't leave your family history stuck in a box or drawer; have them framed by a Guild Commended picture framer. I will be delighted to discuss your family history project without obligation.

The results can quite simply be stunning!
